German Alpine Road – A magical tour of the peaks
The German Alpine Road – drive-in cinema at its very best! Welcome to a winding 450 km tour through the majestic panorama of the Bavarian Alps, from Lindau on Lake Constance to Berchtesgaden on Lake Königssee. Driving, cycling or walking this route is like travelling through the greatest hits of the Alps:
…
the Bavarian Alps, which can be seen across most of Bavaria, stand in all their glory and are home to merry musicians, pubs selling steins of beer and living traditions, all in all making for a truly memorable driving experience. The stunning views and the sense that you need only jump to catch a glimpse of the other side of the Alpine ridge, mean that you are truly on the German Alpine Road, the banqueting hall of the Alps.
A chocolate box scene
Over 20 crystal clear lakes, proud castles, fairytale palaces, over 60 spa resorts, locks, valleys, hundreds of peaks and sun-kissed Alpine pastures used by herdsmen to make delicious mountain cheeses can be found all along the route. You can also enjoy gastronomic delights in rustic cottages, cosy beer gardens or lakeside cafes and can try your hand at activities such as rafting, watersports, paragliding, cycling, hiking, climbing or even wintersports at one of the region's numerous ski resorts.
It doesn't get better than this
As you travel along the route, you can either choose to spend your holiday on a farm or stay over in a luxurious lodging house. Nestled amongst a veritable goldmine of nature and culture, you will also encounter world-famous attractions such as Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze, King Ludwig's royal castles near Füssen, Ettal Abbey, Benediktbeuern Abbey, Lake Chiemsee, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wieskirche Pilgrimage Church, the Watzmann mountain, St. Bartholomew's Church at Lake Königssee and the Berchtesgaden Apline National Park.
If you've already been here, you already know the score
It's not often that drivers are able to enjoy a picture-perfect view of this calibre, and so you really should make time for a stop or two to enjoy the spectacular views along the way. A short trip just doesn't do it justice!
