أسرع، أبعد، أعلى - وأهم من كل ذلك: أكثر متعة! هذا هو مفهوم الرياضة في ألمانيا، سواء كانت كرة القدم صاحبة أعلى نسب مشاهدة أم أن السباقات الأسبوعية الكبرى هي ما تفتن مئات الألوف من المشاهدين أم أكبر سباق في العالم للمراكب الشراعية الذي يقام على الأراضي الألمانية: دائماً ما يسري الشعار الأوليمبي على الزوار والضيوف أيضاً: "المتعة كلها هي أن تحضر وتعايش".

German basketball has become famous thanks to players such as Dirk Nowitzki, winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player Award. In the German basketball league, or Bundesliga, 18 teams compete for the title of German Champions over 34 match days, from early October until late April every year. The competition heats up even further when the top eight teams qualifying for the playoff stage go head to head with each other. The matches attract more than a million avid spectators each season.

Every year, international biathletes descend upon Thuringia for the Biathlon World Cup, held in Oberhof's DKB Ski Arena. In their wake, tens of thousands of fans from Germany and all around the world flock to this small resort to cheer on their favourites in the relays, sprints and mass start races. Six video screens help spectators keep the competitors in view as they negotiate the winding course. And more than 30 stalls serving a range of Thuringian specialities ensure that any hunger pangs before, during or after the races are kept firmly at bay.

Golfers have been pitching and putting their way to victory at the BMW International Open since 1989. The annual event, which was originally based in Munich, will be held alternately in Munich and Cologne from 2012 onwards. With a prize pot of a cool two million euro, this is one of the most sought-after titles on the European circuit. International superstars such as Seve Ballesteros, Fred Couples, Lee Westwood, Bernhard Langer and Martin Kaymer have all teed off at the BMW International Open.

There are hands-on activities for children and grown-ups as well as the ProAm tournament that pitches tennis legends against celebrity players. Famous names from the tennis world such as Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer and Mikhail Youzhny provide plenty of sporting highlights.

Exotic dragon boats first made an appearance on Pfaffenteich Lake in Schwerin in 1992. They were a real hit with spectators and the team from Schwerin's Canoe Racing Association soon became German vice champions. A year later Schwerin hosted the European Championships. Today the festival is one of the biggest in Europe with up to 200 teams from all over the world taking part in the event. The accompanying entertainment includes live bands, fun regattas and firework displays.
