The German Toy Road is an approximately 300 km route that runs between the city of Nuremberg in the heart of Franconia and the Thuringian state capital of Erfurt and which brings together an unusually enjoyable theme and a wealth of tradition. Head off with your kids on the journey of their dreams and meet lots of new friends along the way. Every day is a new adventure – don't just sit there, come along and join in the fun!
There are all sorts of toys in all shapes and sizes: at factories, display rooms, model railways, teddy bear workshops, doll manufacturers, museums and adventure parks – and the Playmobil Funpark in Zirndorf is an absolute must for kids. It's a great way to experience a rich cultural heritage across some 30 towns and districts.
The name speaks for itself
Collectors, enthusiasts, fans of dolls, dollhouses and teddy bears alike are all in with a chance of finding that crucial collector's piece at one of the route's workshops, auctions or collector's fairs. At the doll's hospital, visitors can see how doctors make an old 'unbreakable Lisa dolly' better again, or watch the teddy doctor spruce up teddies that have seen better days. Industrial toy manufacturers also offer an insight into their production techniques, while larger toy factories usually also have factory outlets where you might be able to snap up a bargain or two. They also hold exhibitions about games and toys from time to time.
No time for boredom!
A look behind the scenes at a doll maker's workshop gives an insight into the high-quality of German workmanship. A visit to a glass factory to find out about the connection between Christmas decorations, glass marbles and doll's eyes, is sure to make the heart of any toy enthusiast beat that little bit faster. If you're looking for a little variety, a visit to one of the route's parks such as the Trusetal Garden Gnome Park (Zwergenpark Trusetal) might be just what you're looking for. "The revolt of the gnomes" is just one of the sights you can see here.
But that's not all.
It's not just the kids who will be fascinated by the toys. A trip down the German Toy Road is a trip back to your childhood so why not come along and enjoy the fun? Remember: play isn't all fun. It makes you cleverer too!
