Quality-certified trails and regional tours
The new Erzgebirge-Vogtland Ridge Trail offers unspoilt countryside, traditional crafts and mining as it follows the ridge of the Erzgebirge mountains along the Czech border. Lace up those walking boots and get away from it all!
The low-lying Erzgebirge mountains form a natural barrier between the German state of Saxony and Bohemia in the Czech Republic. The German/Czech border runs just north of the ridge. Starting in Altenberg-Geising in the eastern Erzgebirge mountains, the Erzgebirge-Vogtland Ridge Trail traverses the Vogtland region and ends in Blankenstein, Thuringia. Inspired by the historical ridge trail, which opened in 1904 and mainly followed a course through the Czech part of the Erzgebirge mountains, the new version of the route opened in May 2011. Walkers can look forward to a challenging trail over the highest peaks in the Erzgebirge mountains and Vogtland region, including Mount Auersberg (1,019m), Mount Fichtelberg (1,215m) and the Schneckenstein (883m), a topaz outcrop. Fabulous views of unspoilt nature are available from the mountain ridge between Saxony and Bohemia. The Erzgebirge mountains are known for their traditional crafts. Arched candle holders originally lit up windows all year round so that the miners could find their way home. They are now particularly popular at Christmas time. Many craft workshops where the ornately carved decorations are still made can be found along the Erzgebirge-Vogtland Ridge Trail. The walk also passes reminders of the region’s mining heritage, including a number of tunnels and pits that are open to the public.
Tip: Toy Museum, Seiffen
The museum’s 2,000 exhibits bear witness to the techniques, skill and inventiveness of the toy makers. Larger-than-life versions of the toys enable children to interact with and experience the toys in a new way.
