Neanderthal Museum Mettmann

The Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann brings the theory of evolution to life, as interactive exhibits and multimedia displays take the whole family on a journey through four million years of human history.

Welcoming some 170,000 visitors through its doors every year, the Neanderthal Museum is one of the most successful archaeological museums in the whole of Germany. One of Europe's most state-of-the-art museums can now be found near the site where the Neanderthal man was first discovered more than 160 years ago. Here, the history of mankind is relived from its very beginnings in the African savanna more than four million years ago all the way up to the present day.

The permanent exhibition was given a major revamp not long ago and plenty of new highlights now await inquisitive visitors. A morphing station (the only one of its kind in the world) even gives visitors the chance to be transformed into a Neanderthal. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm
