Munich Motet Choir: embracing the new

The Munich Motet Choir was founded in 1960 by a group of music students from Munich University. Today, with around 120 members, it is one of Germany's most celebrated, most adventurous mixed concert choirs.

Despite its name, the Munich Motet Choir's repertoire is not restricted to early music but ranges from Monteverdi right through to the 21st century. Its fame came about mainly through its interpretations of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, which it performed in the presence of the composer and for Orff's centenary celebrations in 1995. Other 20th century works by composers such as Britten, Honegger and Poulenc are programmed alongside very recent compositions by Schneider, Hiller and Ben-Haim. The choir has a policy of musically commentating on current events or historical anniversaries (armistice, Kristallnacht). Most frequently it can be heard in the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew at Sendlinger-Tor-Platz in Munich.
