At the ITB international travel fair, the German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC) bestowed its certification of premium quality on two new routes. The 960km D-Route 3 – part of the R1 European Cycle Route – is the longest long-distance cycle trail running right across Germany and has been awarded three stars. The 260km Fulda Cycle Route has also been recognised as a premium route, receiving four ADFC stars. Long-distance cycle routes in Germany pass through rural regions and scenic vineyard landscapes, as well as through towns and cities with cultural attractions. Surfacing, navigability, signposting and tourist infrastructure are among the quality features and key grading criteria for a premium cycle route.
