The Nahe: a river rich in delights. Nahe Cycle Route

The Nahe Cycle Route begins at the source of the Nahe river by Lake Bostalsee, reluctant though you may be to leave the lake and its many leisure activities.

To begin the tour, you set off along the river through dense forests and dramatic rock landscapes towards the Rhine. You can try your hand at prospecting in Idar-Oberstein, the gemstone capital of Germany. With a little luck you might find a precious stone to take home with you. The cycle route continues into the Nahe wine region. Rolling on through the vineyards you pass through tiny wine villages where you can stop and sample the local food and drink. Other places to relax along the way are the spa resorts. Salt-enriched air and therapeutic mud help to boost your energy for the last leg to the town of Bingen, where the Nahe empties into the Rhine. Terrain: the route runs mainly on asphalt paths, mostly free of traffic. Some sections are more suited to energetic cyclists in search of a challenge (from Nohfelden to Idar-Oberstein); perfect for families after that. Scenery: river landscape in a tributary valley of the Rhine with densely wooded slopes and vineyards

    • Length: 128 kilometres
    • Starts: Selbach/Nohfelden (Lake Bostalsee)
    • Ends: Bingen am Rhein
    • Route info: mainly flat terrain, hilly in parts, easily managed with children, majority of route suitable for trailers
