In Japan they're known as the angels from Bavaria. The Tölzer Knabenchor is formed of up to 200 boy singers from Upper Bavaria and has won fans all over the world through its festivals, tours, operas, radio concerts and recordings.
The choir originated as a scout singing group in Bad Tölz in 1956 and by 1963 it was working for the first time with composer Carl Orff. Since 1971 Munich has been the focus of its work. The Tölzer Knabenchor is a mixed boys' choir specialising in medieval, baroque, church and folk music. It has made several award-winning Bach recordings, and individual appearances by the Tölz boys in operas (from Monteverdi via Mozart to Britten) have received rave reviews. Over the years the Tölzer Knabenchor has worked with many great orchestras and conductors including Barenboim, Bernstein, Harnoncourt, Karajan, Rattle and Solti. Herbert von Karajan called it "one of the best choirs in the world".
