Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig

With its striking silhouette and its height of 91 metres, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, one of Leipzig’s most well-known landmarks, ranks among Europe’s largest. The monumental construction is gigantic and sprawls across four hectares at the authentic location: it gives spectacular insights into the events of the devastating battle with Napoleon in October 1813, in which over 600,000 soldiers participated and more than 100,000 died. In the foundations, there is a crypt full of depictions of mourning soldiers, whose heavy eyes symbolise their struggle with death. On the second level, there is the Hall of Fame for the German people, and rising above this is the dome. Situated in front of the cenotaph is the “Sea of Tears”, symbolising all the tears shed for victims of the brutal battle. For a phenomenal panorama view, you can climb the 364 steps from the foundation to the top.

Hofbräuhaus beer hall in Munich

A truly unmissable Bavarian experience awaits at the famous Hofbräuhaus beer hall at Am Platzl in the old quarter. Originally a brewery, today it is an internationally acclaimed 'beer temple'. Locals can be seen dressed in traditional costume, drinking Munich beer from the famous Mass, a one-litre tankard, and enjoying traditional hearty specialities served up with a good dose of Bavarian hospitality. Probably the largest beer hall in the world serving some 30,000 guests every day, it is always noisy and full of beer-fuelled cheer.

Viktualienmarkt food market in Munich

Nowhere else in Munich city centre offers a more exclusive and varied selection of specialities than the huge Viktualienmarkt. Visitors will find a whole host of stalls selling spices, game, fish, local and exotic fruit, flowers and plants, and much more. And it all looks as good as it tastes. Viktualienmarkt is also home to the city's most central beer garden where you can enjoy local beer and traditional Bavarian fare together with people from all walks of life. A number of traditional events such as the raising of the maypole, the brewer's day, summer festival and the 'Dance of the Market Women' are also held here.

Heide Park Resort

There almost aren't enough superlatives to describe Heide Park Resort, which opened in 1978. Set within a beautiful landscaped park near Soltau in Lüneburg Heath, this is one of Germany's biggest theme parks.

Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces in Brühl ( UNESCO World Heritage)

In Brühl, a small town in the Rhineland, architecture, sculpture, painting and garden design have been brought together to create a first-class work of art. A fine example of a German rococo ensemble, Augustusburg Palace and Falkenlust hunting lodge, along with their baroque gardens, have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1984.

Marienberg Fortress Würzburg

Towering over the river Main, well-fortified and yet full of charm, Marienberg Citadel is a fine example of a medieval castle. Originally built as a Renaissance palace and later converted into a baroque fortress, it is one of Germany's oldest ancestral seats. A Celtic fortified refuge stood here in 1000 BC, a Church of St. Mary was consecrated here in 706 and the castle was founded in around 1200. The Fürstenbau Museum can be visited in the innermost ward of the medieval fortress which, in addition to exquisite furniture, tapestries and paintings, also houses the Prince's Hall and the prince-bishops' treasury and vestry.

Oberammergau the “Passionsdorf” is a village in Upper Bavaria. Oberammergau is world-famous for its Passion Plays, which take place every ten years.
