Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: little owls

Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – land of orchids and savoir-vivre

The UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve is known for its swathes of orchids, beautiful riverside meadows and beech forests, as well as being a habitat for rare animal species. You can easily tour the area by bike, electric bike, on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage.

Situated in the south-eastern corner of the Saarland on the border with France, the UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve is known as the 'Tuscany of the Saarland' because of its gently rolling hills. There are many highlights waiting to be discovered in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

A haven for endangered species
The biosphere reserve is a habitat for 80 per cent of the Saarland's population of little owls, which are an endangered species. The marsh fritillary butterfly with its orange and brown markings, which is also under threat, has found a home here too. And you'll get to see countless varieties of orchids, the queen of flowers.

Retracing the past
Culturally minded visitors are also well catered for here, with countless opportunities for them to delve into the past. Many places in this age-old region contain fascinating legacies from the time of Roman and Celtic settlements.

Walking, cycling and horse riding
Walkers can enjoy unparalleled views on two routes that were once used by the St. James pilgrims, while cyclists can enjoy a touch of French flair on the Saarland Cycle Route and the 'Velo vis à vis' cycling network. For more ambitious cycling tours, you might like to hire an electric bike. And those who are happier in another kind of saddle can explore the Bliesgau region on horseback.

A destination for food lovers
With top chefs and events such as the Bliesgau Lamb Festival, the culinary culture here is hailed by food lovers as one of the best in the French- and German-speaking countries.
