A festival that takes you back to your childhood: the Karl May festival in Bad Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein , brings Karl May's characters to life like nowhere else. Winnetou, Old Shatterhand, Old Surehand, Sam Hawkins and all the others bring a flavour of the Wild West to the town, whose huge open-air arena provides a spectacular setting for these legendary tales.

In the Bavarian Forest near the German-Czech border, a fearsome dragon menaces the small town of Furth. But fortunately, year after year, the valiant locals confront and eventually manage to slay it. Furth's dragon-slaying festival, a spectacle that attracts tens of thousands of visitors, traditionally begins in the second week in August.

You might not necessarily associate Recklinghausen – a former mining town in the Ruhr region – with the theatre. But you'd be surprised. Recklinghausen really comes into its own as an international city of culture during the festival season from 1 May to mid-June. The Ruhr Theatre Festival is one of the biggest and most highly acclaimed events of its kind in Europe.

Quality over quantity: this is the unwritten law that determines which artists are invited to perform at Jena's annual Cultural Arena festival. Performers will be participating in a programme of contrasts, ushered in by a four-day theatre spectacular. This is then followed by a string of films, concerts, Sunday bills for children and various specials, in a line-up that is as unconventional as it is entertaining.

Pretty much everything is on offer during Berlin's Long Night of Opera and Theatre: operas, plays, concerts, singing, revues, musicals, variety, improv, cabaret, comedy, children's shows, youth theatre and puppet shows. More than 150 scenes and plays will be performed every hour between 7pm and 1am on nearly 60 stages.

Rhineland-Palatinate's Summer of Culture takes place every year from 1 May to 3 October and features well over 200 projects covering all kinds of different cultural aspects. The theme is revised annually to reflect new focuses for the content, and the venue for the grand opening also changes every year. A large cultural festival on the first weekend in May offers families their first peek at the summer's programme of events.
