Germany is the world's no. 1 location for hosting international trade fairs. It stands out against the international competition in terms of its facilities, its level of innovation and its broad reach. Around 150 international trade fairs and exhibitions are held in Germany every year, attracting up to 170,000 exhibitors and between nine and ten million visitors.
The outstanding feature of German trade fairs is their international character: more than half of the exhibitors come from other countries, and a third of those are from countries outside Europe. And over one in five visitors travels in from abroad. There is also a wide selection of regional trade exhibitions and consumer fairs held across the country, bringing together around 50,000 exhibitors and around six million visitors every year.
Germany's 22 major trade fair venues offer a total of 2.7 million square metres of hall space for the very largest national and international events. Three of the five largest exhibition centres in the world are in Germany, and four of the ten highest performing trade fair organisers in the world are based here. This makes the German trade fair industry one of the leading service sectors both domestically and internationally.
For German companies, trade fairs are among the most important tools for business-to-business communication. Exhibitors and visitors spend a total of around €12 billion every year on trade fairs in Germany, and trade fairs boost annual economic output by €23.5 billion.
