Carnival parades in Cologne

The city of Cologne, famous for its magnificent cathedral, is turned upside down during the carnival season. Cologne is one of Germany's carnival hotspots and there is plenty to see and do on Carnival Sunday on 19 February 2012. Traditionally the school and neighbourhood parades (Schull- und Veedelszöch) make their way through the city centre. This is in fact a combination of two events and involves around 40 of the city's schools, as well as local groups and neighbourhood associations. A panel of judges decides on the winners in the 'best float' and 'best group' categories.
