The Swabian-Alemannic Carnival is one of the largest and most important public festivals in the Black Forest and is quite different from the Rhineland carnival. Instead of the colourful uniforms that you see in the Rhineland, carnival-goers here dress up as spirits, demons and witches with heavy wooden masks. There are celebrations all over the region, from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt and Freiburg and all the way to the Swiss border, before everything is over again for another year.
If you're in Germany outside carnival season but don't want to miss out on this long-established tradition, carnival museums offer a taste of the carnival all year round. The largest in the region is the Narrenschopf museum in Bad Dürrheim.
