For many people, Ash Wednesday on 22 February marks the end of the most wonderful time of the year: the carnival. On Shrove Tuesday, the festivities come to a close and the carnival is given a fitting send-off. After the many parades, processions and all-round cheer, Germany's 'fifth season' is over for another year.
For Christians, Ash Wednesday has a very different meaning. It is the first day of Lent and reminds us of the forty days of fasting and prayer that Jesus spent in the wilderness. Whether you give anything up for Lent and what you give up is entirely up to you – but one or two culinary treats should surely be allowed even during this period of fasting!
