Ludwig II af Bayern blev født i 1845 og var en stor beundrer af romantikken fra middelalderen og det franske hofs glans fra enevældens tid. Han lod disse fordums tider genopstå på sine slotte. Den dag i dag får de drømmene frem i millioner af mennesker.

Neuschwanstein is known all over the world as a symbol of idealised romantic architecture and for the tragic story of its owner. After losing sovereignty in his own kingdom, Ludwig II withdrew into his own world of myths, legend and fairytales.
