Hohenschwangau Castle: a royal attitude to life

“The best things come in small packages!” Schwangau near Füssen is a small, idyllic community set against the breath-taking backdrop of the Ostallgäu landscape, which is on the “Romantic Road” scenic route. The romantic Hohenschwangau Castle, where King Ludwig II spent his youth, once served as a summer residence for the royal family and can be found near Neuschwanstein Castle.

Riddles and myths surround Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle’s history extends far into the past. From 1832–1836, future King Maximilian II of Bavaria had the dilapidated Schwanstein Castle rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style. The interior décor from the Biedermeier Era has remained unchanged to this day. Following the death of King Ludwig II, his mother, Marie of Prussia (1825–1889), continued to live in the castle for another three years until her death. Be sure to visit the large ballroom, the Oriental room, the Hohenstaufen room, the Tasso room and the Berchta room with its inventory. Visit is only available as a guided tour (several languages available).
