Although Rock im Park has been around for well over ten years, it's still a spring chicken compared to its 'big sister', the phenomenally successful Rock am Ring. Launched in 1985, Rock am Ring clocked up a series of sensational successes and always sold out extremely fast, so the organisers began Rock im Park in 1993 as a second event to keep up with the ever-increasing army of fans.
Originally founded as Rock in Vienna, by 1994 this new festival had moved to the Bavarian capital Munich to become Rock in Riem. In 1995 it changed its name again to Rock im Park, and since 1997 Rock im Park has defined its own identity as the hugely successful – younger – twin of Rock am Ring. The festival takes place at Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg in Franconia, always on the same dates as Rock am Ring and with the same line-up and stage concept wherever possible, with only a few differences.
It was the same success story all over again, with tickets selling out almost as soon as they went on sale, so another sister was born into the rock festival family in 2012: Rock im Pott, which launched in August in the spectacular Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a real alternative for those who have always wanted to go to Rock am Ring or Rock im Park but have never made it.
