Hamburg is not only a cycling hotspot – as the Hamburg Marathon goes to show.
The fact that the people of Hamburg love sport is common knowledge in the rest of Germany. Although many say this has something to do with the weather – when it's cold, it's good to exercise. But those who believe that, don't know the true Hamburg: the enthusiasm of the Hamburg people is genuine and they love their big sporting occasions. The next Hamburg Marathon will again see over 800,000 spectators lining the 26-mile route through the Hanseatic city cheering on more than 20,000 runners. And not only because this route is one of the most beautiful in the world, stretching from Millerntorplatz to Glacischaussee, taking in the HafenCity, Jungfernstieg promenade, City Nord and Eppendorfer Baum. The flat course is also conducive to fast races and top marathon runners such as the Kenyans Paul Kipkemoi Biwott and Evans Kiprop Cheruiyot have always achieved impressive times here.
In contrast to the main event, the relay competition for teams of four, launched in 2012, is intended to be an introduction to long-distance running. With four distances to choose from – 14.8km, 10.6km, 5.3km and 11.5km – it is aimed at families and other teams. An event for all – just like the Hamburg Marathon itself.
