Leipzig – a lively trade fair and culture destination

Leipzig does not only look back on 1000 years of trade fair history but is also famous because of its multifaceted music and cultural scene. Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Wagner stand for a grand music tradition that is today continued by the Gewandhaus orchestra, the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir, Leipzig Opera and many more. Be it the more than 50 museums, the city’s vibrant arts centre Spinnerei, a visit to St. Thomas Church or a guided tour on the traces of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 – Leipzig offers countless opportunities for an unforgettable stay.

The historic city centre exudes a distinctive flair. Most of the city’s sights are located within walking distance. Visitors to Leipzig are fascinated by the splendid architecture of its former trade fair halls and the closed system of arcades, which is unique in Germany. Stylish boutiques and top department stores invite to shop and stroll. 1,400 cafés, bars and restaurants, clubs and theatres offer a diverse nightlife which knows no official closing time. With Leipzig Zoo and its newly opened tropical hall Gondwanaland or the newly created lakes in the green surroundings Leipzig is also an ideal place for both acitivity holiday and relaxation.

Saxony: A Cosmopolitan Region and a Centre of Culture and Art

The cultural history of Saxony stretches back over more than a thousand years, inspiring people from all over the world as Germany’s number one cultural destination.

Visitors appreciate the sophisticated art and culture this region, located in the south-east of Germany, has to offer: the Semperoper in Dresden, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Chemnitz Opera, castles and fortresses on history laden places, famous theatre and musical performances, high-quality festivals, museums and exhibitions of international rank.

However Saxony also owes its worldwide reputation to its rich tradition of craftsmanship. Nowhere else in the world as many hand-made Christmas products are made as in the Erzgebirge, famous under the trade mark Erzgebirgische Holzkunst®.

Glashütte is known for its masterly production of high-quality proprietary watches. The town of Meissen is the home of the famous Meissen porcelain, which has been produced here for 300 years. Another first in Europe is the production of musical instruments, a tradition in Saxony’s southern region since 1677.

Visitors to Saxony can of course also enjoy activity holidays in the Saxon countryside with its river landscapes and picturesque mountains. Walks and bike tours, nostalgic trips on narrow-gauges railways, boat trips on the largest and oldest fleet of paddle steamers of the world or adventure trips through the bizarre rocks of the Elbsandstone Mountains.

Wherever visitors go in Saxony, they will encounter evidence of turbulent history and modern lifestyle.

The Tourism Marketing Company of Saxony provides you with themed and tailor made programmes, travel information and gives assistance to the travel trade.
