Opened in 2008, this pilgrimage route of around 50km from Erfurt to the ruins of Paulinzella Abbey passes some of Thuringia's most special attractions and follows in the footsteps of St. Elisabeth, St. Walburga and St. Paulina.
The trail starts in Erfurt and ends at the ruins of Romanesque Paulinzella Abbey, passing through Hochheim, Möbisburg, Molsdorf Palace, Ichtershausen, Arnstadt, Dornheim, Angelhausen-Oberndorf, Hausen, Görbitzhausen, Niederwillingen, Griesheim and Singer Berg. It is a chance to contemplate the good deeds and life's work of three amazing women of historical importance – the Benedictine nun St. Walburga (710-779), the noblewoman and convent founder St. Paulina (1067-1107) and St. Elisabeth (1207-1231), daughter of the King of Hungary, patron of the diocese of Erfurt and celebrated patron saint throughout the world – and their role in the history of the church in Thuringia. The trail also follows the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. This spiritual route, lined with wonderful places of prayer, is ideal for pilgrims and walkers wishing to learn more about the history of the local area and its churches. However, as it is quite short, it is also ideal for travellers wishing to catch the pilgrim bug and get a taste of what it's like to embark on such a journey.
