Charlottenburg Palace was built at the end of the 17th century as a gift from Elector Friedrich III to his wife, Sophie Charlotte. A variety of successors made their own additions to this former summer residence, transforming it into a handsome and prestigious palace that is now the finest example of baroque architecture in Berlin.
Charlottenburg Palace is the largest and most magnificent palace in Berlin. Inaugurated in 1699 and originally planned as a small garden palace, it has been repeatedly extended and remodelled by famous architects such as Eosander of Goethe, Georg Wenceslaus von Knobelsdorff and Carl Langhans. In addition to sumptuous halls and galleries Charlottenburg Palace is now also home to an impressive art collection, including masterpieces by Watteau. The palace park is a large baroque garden and home to the Belvedere teahouse and the Mausoleum of Queen Luise and Friedrich Wilhelm III.
