Bremen’s city centre offers urban life, history, culture, parks, rural areas and the ubiquitous Weser River, which is crossed by ferry on this circular route. This is the perfect route for exploring the beautiful Hanseatic city by bicycle, occasionally stopping for a bite to eat and to take in the sights.
Starting from Bremen Central Station, the route heads through a tunnel and onto a truly varied cycling trail. You can leave the tarmac paths and give the cobblestones a try, or explore the highlights of the route on foot.
The route starts with a ride along the “Culture Mile”, home to the impressive Kunsthalle art gallery and Bremen Theatre, then on through the eastern suburbs with their beautiful Bremen-style houses: terraces influenced by British, Dutch and French elements, including mezzanine verandas and basement living rooms. Riders can stop for refreshments in the trendy bars of Bremen’s “Bermuda Triangle”. The route continues along the Osterdeich dike to the Weser Stadium and the Pauliner Marsch green belt with its sports facilities. The Hal Över ferry transfers cyclists from the Stadtwerder peninsula to Weserstrand beach, where the route then passes allotments and Lake Werdersee as it heads further into the New Town. The cafés here afford stunning views of the Old Town. Riders can also stop for a quick beer in the world-famous Beck's brewery. The route continues along the Schlachte promenade to the market square, from where the Town Hall and the statue of Roland, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, can be explored on foot. The Town Musicians of Bremen" greet visitors on the walk to Schnoor, Bremen’s oldest quarter, which is full of houses belonging to nautical craftsmen and fishermen.
And if you feel like cycling a little further, you can join the long-distance cycle route from Hamburg to Bremen here.
Characteristics: Keep an eye on the traffic! If you pay careful attention to the metal rails embedded in the road, you can enjoy the route across Bremen’s inner city and across the Weser: Bremen has more to offer than urban lifestyle alone.
Scenery: Urban residential areas give way to parkland and recreation areas, cultural diversity and UNESCO World Heritage sites along the ever-present Weser River. This flat, circular route gives riders a flavour of the real Bremen.
