The great quality of life here is appreciated around the world. Not only in Germany, Düsseldorf is popular as a shopping city with a very special lifestyle. But the Altstadt (Old Town), the Rhine embankment promenade, the MedienHafen and our top-ranking museums and events are also attracting increasing numbers of visitors and help shape Düsseldorf’s image both nationally and internationally.
We utilise this image to help Düsseldorf stand out as an elegant shopping metropolis and city of modern architecture. Düsseldorf: Cosmopolitan city break destination with diverse tourist attractions
Düsseldorf on the banks of the Rhine is the capital city of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state. Recognised for its high quality of life (ranking fifth worldwide, Mercer 2011), the city scores with excellent infrastructure, modern architecture, tradition and cultural attractions of international distinction. The tolerance and cosmopolitan nature of the city are evidenced in great friendliness towards tourists (ranking second in the “Most Tourist-Friendly City in Germany 2010” study). With close to four million booked accommodations and countless millions of day visitors Düsseldorf is a popular city break destination in Germany all year round.
Düsseldorf is famed worldwide for its unique shopping facilities on the luxurious Königsallee, in the historic Altstadt (Old Town) and in the vibrant in-districts Flingern and Unterbilk. Especially in the Advent season, when the atmospheric Christmas market transforms the city into a veritable winter wonderland, the metropolis on the Rhine becomes the number one shopping city. The popular Altstadt never sleeps, not even at night: With some 260 restaurants, bars and inns, it has been known for decades as the “longest bar in the world” and is also home of the Altbier – a real Düsseldorf speciality. The MedienHafen with the Gehry buildings and other architectural highlights by international star architects has established itself as yet another alluring night-life district. For peace and recreation, Düsseldorf offers sprawling parks and gardens right in the heart of the city. One such attraction is Schloss Benrath (Benrath Palace). This late baroque ensemble of palace and park is one of numerous museums found in Düsseldorf. Many sights can be conveniently explored on a “HopOn HopOff tour” in a comfortable open-top double-decker bus.

Whether on business or a leisurely city trip, whether on shopping tour or a stroll through the museums – the lifestyle metropolis on the Rhine invites you to discoveries, experiences and enjoyment.
Explore its highlights on our guided tours between the Old Town, Königsallee and the "MedienHafen", by bus, on foot, by boat, carriage or bike. Our well-trained, knowledgeable city guides will make you familiar with Düsseldorf’s sights and landmarks.
Düsseldorf is the ideal starting point for daytrips in the region. The state capital is situated at the crossroads of very different cultural landscapes, each with their own characteristics. A wealth of sights and tourist destinations are within an hour’s car journey. Right on the doorstep is the largely rural Lower-Rhine region with its typical river landscape and countless facilities for leisure and relaxation.
In the north there is the Ruhr district with its rich industrial heritage which is just waiting to be discovered and has been extensively redeveloped for tourism. Just as quick to reach are the green hills of the Bergisch Land or the Euro-region around Aachen. Further major cities on the Rhine draw the tourist downstream: Cologne with its millennial history and countless shopping facilities, or the former federal capital, Bonn, whose museum mile attracts visitors from all over Germany.
Whatever the chosen destination, Düsseldorf provides an ideal base with fast connections – whether by car or with the well-developed local public transport network.
Düsseldorf – the international shopping metropolis
The metropolis on the banks of the Rhine is famously regarded as one of the hot spots of international fashion. So much fashion competence concentrated in one area means that the opportunities to shop in Düsseldorf are just endless – it’s where “shopping at its best” can be enjoyed!
Such major international designers as Armani, Bulgari, Gucci, Jil Sander, Prada and Versace have opened shops along the luxurious shopping mile – Königsallee – which is one of Europe’s top retail boulevards. It’s here that exclusive boutiques rub shoulders with major fashion houses, and where shopping malls with elegant street cafés can be found. It is a true catwalk for the latest trends – a great place to see what’s going on and to be seen. Wealthy visitors, models and bankers may be seen browsing the many designer outlets and jewellery shops.
Königsallee, often called the “Kö”, is easily the busiest luxury street in Germany. In a European comparison, the Kö with its 30 top addresses belongs to the shopping locations with the greatest density of high-end businesses. Once Kö-Bogen opens in 2013, the area for top addresses that is Königsallee will be elongated and receive new impulses.
Those who like curious and trendy things will just love taking a stroll through the Altstadt (Old Town). The narrow alleyways have become home to unconventional fashion shops and many avant-garde stores. A particularly idyllic flair may be enjoyed in the historic district of Karlstadt, with its many antique shops, galleries and art shops. Schadowstraße also has many attractive shopping opportunities to offer. And there are lots of shopping arcades in the city centre to make shopping enjoyable even on rainy days.
Shopping enthusiasts and trendsetters will find fashion away from the mainstream all around Lorettostraße, in close proximity to the MedienHafen, or in the trendy, up-and-coming district Flingern.
Those in Düsseldorf unable to choose between Ansons, Peek & Cloppenburg, Esprit, Zara, Mango, New Yorker or Karstadt, and as many as three Galeria Kaufhof, stores should try reading an exciting book. Over six storeys in its largest outlet in Germany, the Mayer’sche bookshop presents the printed word in products ranging from novels to calendars.

Gastronomic Variety
Düsseldorf boasts down-to-earth pubs and cosy eateries, gourmet bistros and the true crème de la crème of restaurants, some of which enjoy top ranking among Germany’s starred establishments.
If you want a night out in Düsseldorf, you can’t ignore the Altstadt. Restaurants ranging from gourmet temples, delicious Indian restaurants to Lebanese falafel takeaways have the right food for all budgets and tastes. And you’ll be spoilt for choice in the Altstadt if you just want a coffee or cappuccino. Countless bars and cafés invite people in to spend time and relax. The fashionable cafés at Stadtbrückchen, Marktplatz and on Mittelstraße are the place to meet and to see and be seen. Düsseldorf’s nightlife enjoys a special reputation that extends far beyond the city. The Altstadt is home to the hottest clubs, the best cocktail bars, Irish pubs and the most famous local breweries. Bolkerstraße, Kurze Straße and Berger Straße make up the “longest bar in the world”. The freshest fruit and vegetables and the tastiest specialities are on sale at the Carlsplatz market. The best place to relax is the Rhine embankment promenade, where the best views of the Rhine, Oberkassel and the MedienHafen are to be had in the shade of the Schlossturm (palace tower). Of course, it’s also possible to take a seat in one of the cafés right next to the landing stages and watch the many rollerbladers, cyclists and people just out for a walk having fun on the banks of the Rhine.
The MedienHafen also plays in the premier league where hospitality is concerned: from the exquisite “Berens am Kai”, with a Michelin star, through the “most golden” curry sausage in Düsseldorf to a cosy cocktail in the evening – the restaurateurs here have adapted to their heterogeneous clientele, which is composed of business customers during the day and the funky in-crowd in the evening, who all meet up to party at the futuristic Club 3001 and at the stylish “Rudas Studios” advertising-film venue.
Don’t miss to taste the Altbier, frequently just called “Alt”, is a special type of dark, top-fermented beer that has its origins in and around Düsseldorf. Alt is usually brewed from several different kinds of barley and hops. The term “Alt” refers to the “old” brewing method employed before technical refrigeration came into use.
