Bremen: Centre of maritime excellence.

Bremen's strengths lie in the fields of transport + logistics and energy + the environment. Aerospace technology is another of Bremen's areas of excellence along with renewable energies, particularly wind energy. The port is an outstanding base for the city's large maritime economy and logistics sector.

Transport + logistics are the key focus for business and research in Bremen, hardly surprising in a major port city. Aerospace, maritime economics and logistics are the most important sectors. In fact, the Federal State of Bremen is one of Europe's most important regions for aerospace technology. Global players such as EADS with their companies Airbus Deutschland GmbH and ASTRIUM GmbH, Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH and OHB-System AG are represented here as well as many small and medium-sized enterprises working on projects such as the Airbus A 380, the upper stages of the Ariane rockets, the ATV space transporter and the Columbus laboratory module for the ISS. The DLR (Germany's national research centre for aeronautics and space) has its headquarters in Bremen as well as the Institute for Space Systems. A host of networks and relationships between science, business and economic development programmes exist here and are reflected in the large number of international trade conventions and conferences in the city. In July 2010, Bremen hosted the largest ever international space research conference COSPAR Scientific Assembly.

More than 580 companies operating in all areas of the maritime economics and logistics sector are active in Bremen/Bremerhaven. In addition, some 30 scientific research institutes are dedicated to investigating all facets of this specialist field.

Energy + the environment, like the aerospace sector, also enjoys a strong network of competence: research, education, politics and business all work together extremely effectively. The competence field covers every aspect of the sector from project development to the production of equipment and components to investigating the effects of wind energy technology. These and the many points of interest for expert guided tours and technical visits marked on a "wind A-Z" for the city are all reasons why the Bremen area is the destination of choice for many important sector events.
