Reunification brought the total number of wine regions in Germany up to thirteen. In the largest of these, Rheinhessen in Rhineland-Palatinate, some 6,000 vintners tend to 120 million vines that produce more than 2.5 million hectolitres of wine – primarily high-quality rieslings. A new generation of winemakers has brought this old-established winegrowing region to the attention of connoisseurs the world over.
