The Uckermärker Landrunde Trail - a glorious walk from Berlin to Poland

The Uckermärker Landrunde Trail is a 167 kilometre circular route in the north of Brandenburg. The Uckermark region is one of Germany's scenic gems, with forests, lakes and unspoiled natural surroundings.

This route is a German quality hiking trail, meaning it is almost impossible to get lost on it. The signposts with the red dot on a white background help hikers to find their way. But it doesn't mean we're walking in Japan – we are actually in northern Brandenburg. Berlin is a stone's throw away, as is the Oder river marking the Polish border.

The route's natural backdrop is spectacular as we cross through parts of Schorfheide-Chorin, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Agriculture has seen great change in this region. 32 percent of the farms here are now organic – the highest concentration of organic farms in Germany.

We walk along cobbled streets, as if back in the 19th century. Time seems to have stood still here. The Uckermärker Landrunde leads us through very dense forests and past stunning bodies of water, especially in Uckermark Lakes Nature Park. Don't forget your swimwear, unless you prefer bathing in the nude. The best thing about this quality hiking trail is that it is a genuine wellness oasis. The route is mostly flat, so the walk feels effortless and enables us to forget about our day-to-day worries.

TIP: Germany's largest area of reeds

Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:
"I recommend the first stage of this trail from Prenzlau to Warnitz. You get to see the largest area of reeds in Germany and hike alongside a number of lakes. You can even plunge into the water as there are many amazing isolated bathing spots."
