Elbe Riverside UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – a voyage of discovery

There is much more to the Elbe than the cities of Hamburg and Dresden. The river loops through stunning natural and man-made landscapes, flowing past pristine meadows, white sandy beaches and wooded hills.

Running from the Middle Elbe lowlands to the North German Plain, this unspoilt river landscape stretches across five of Germany's federal states. To the west lies the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park in Lower Saxony , while the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park is to the east.

A rafting trip made in heaven

To admire the views from the water, why not take a riverboat excursion, a discovery tour by canoe or even a trip on a solar-powered raft? Idyllic moorings for motorboats are also widely available.

A perfect setting for cycling and walking

If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can follow the well-signposted cycling and walking trails, such as the 840km Elbe Cycle Route between Bad Schandau and Cuxhaven.

An ever-changing landscape of natural beauty

However you choose to explore this area, you will find rich and varied countryside at every turn. The broad glacial valley in the south boasts inland dunes and steep riverbanks, while the meadows of the northern Elbe valley feature gnarled trees and extensive woodland. The wildlife is just as diverse as the scenery, with thousands of cranes and Nordic geese making their way through the riverside meadows. White-tailed eagles and beavers have also made their home in this remarkable unspoilt region.
