Enjoy the romance of rail travel on the Steam Railway Route

Leave the car at home for once and treat yourself to a train ride. What could be more stylish than a trip on a traditional, narrow gauge steam train on the 650km Steam Railway Routerunningright through the heart of vibrant Saxony?

The Steam Railway Route is more than just a railway timetable. This is a chance to 'train' your sights on soaking up Saxony's industrial heritage, to enjoy and discover the region from totally new perspectives (and from a traditional vantage point to boot). The route connects a host of remarkable holiday regions: Muskau Heath and the winter sports resort of Fichtelberg, the Erzgebirge mining area and Vogtland's 'musical corner' and national park, the baroque Moritzburg Palace near Dresden and the Zittau Hills nature reserve. It is mainly oriented around the network of old narrow gauge railway lines, some of which have been preserved as part of the region's cultural heritage. On all sides of the steam railway a host of artistic and cultural delights are waiting to be discovered, as well as the traditional crafts for which the region is known and a myriad of museums, monuments and living reminders of railway heritage. This is one train journey that won't leave you bored. The narrow gauge railways in Saxony were once the largest, single-operator narrow gauge railway network in Germany, and soon after the turn of the 20th century, some of the network's lines became important for tourism in the area.
