Exploring the Spessart-Main region in every direction: You can do just that on the Spessart Hills Trails 1 and 2, which take you to the most scenic places that the Spessart hills nature reserve has to off er.
The Spessart hills make up one of Germany’s largest single expanses of forest. From west to east, the Spessart Hills Trail 1 crosses the Bavarian Spessart nature reserve, starting in Aschaffenburg’s Fasanerie Park. The first highlights are the rock formation on the Teufelskanzel (devil’s pulpit) and Kippenburg castle ruins on Godelsberg hill, followed by Schmerlenbach Convent, a destination for many pilgrims and walkers. The Spessart Hills Trail 1 and Spessart Hills Trail 2 intersect near Waldaschaff. Further west, you reach the town of Rothenbuch in the Upper Spessart with its electoral residence. From the heights of the Spessart Hills we head down into the Main valley to the beautiful Franconian town of Lohr am Main. Here, in the former ‘fishermen’s quarter’, you cross the river Main to Mariabuchen pilgrimage church. You then start your descent towards the Franconian town of Gemünden am Main, which is located on three rivers.
Tip: Lohr Castle and Spessart Museum
The 14th-century castle in Lohr, which was originally built as a residence for the Counts of Rieneck, today houses the Spessart Museum. This 2,000m² exhibition explores the history of the Spessart region and its inextricable links with the forest.
