Born: 1754 | Died: n.a.
Johann Adam Birkenstock was first registered as a shoemaker in 1774, and the Birkenstock company has been a family company for 230 years now.
Birkenstock is known for its special insoles, which were developed since the late 19th century and during World War II, when the insoles served as orthopedic support for people injured during the war.
Produced in Saxony in eastern Germany and distributed via a large mailing house, the orthopedic Birkenstocks became very fashionable, and they are available in many shapes and prints. Some of them have even been designed by German top model Heidi Klum.
