Over a period of more than 30 years, Dresden Music Festival has come to dominate the city's cultural calendar. Every year between May and June this festival attracts audiences from home and abroad to the banks of the Elbe. Music fills the air over the course of the two-week festival as prestigious orchestras, acclaimed soloists and ensembles descend on Dresden to perform concerts in some of the finest venues in the city centre and the surrounding region. Year after year international stars come for the unique opportunity to perform in the musical city of Dresden. The Dresden Music Festival always boasts a hugely varied programme of events. Traditionally the festival has a new theme each year, placing a new musical world in the spotlight for the audience to discover. An especially popular event – first featured in the 1981 festival – is Dresden Sings & Makes Music, which without fail attracts hundreds of singers and thousands of festival-goers to the Brühl Terrace. This open-air concert is a real treat for the audience, who get the chance not only to listen to beautiful music but also to sing along in the picturesque old town surroundings. Jan Vogler has been artistic director of the Dresden Music Festival since the 2009 season. He uses his role to promote tolerance and to bring people together from all over the world through the power of music.
