Some of Frankfurt's cultural events are renowned far beyond the city itself. During Museums Night and the Museum Embankment Festival venues stay open late into the night. A particular favourite with young people is 'Bahnhofsviertelnacht'. Every two years Frankfurt is lit up both literally and metaphorically by the Luminale arts festival. And the Frankfurt Studio Open Days, organised by the two local studio complexes, draw art lovers to the artists' workshops.
Almost 50 venues in Offenbach and Frankfurt participate in Museums Night. With themes such as SeeingArt, they throw open their doors from 7pm to 2am, presenting their exhibitions and offering a varied programme of guided tours, theatre and performance, live music, readings, film screenings, concerts and open-air events.
The Museum Embankment Festival, one of the largest arts festivals in Germany, draws almost three million people to the river Main on the last weekend in August each year. The museums stay open late into the night. There is also a varied supporting programme on numerous stages, plus lots of delicious food and drink from around the world. Every year, a different guest country invites people to experience its cuisine and culture in a special exhibition area.
'Bahnhofsviertelnacht' showcases the different facets of this once prestigious area around the main train station. From red-light establishments to welfare facilities, Freemasons' halls and other curious locations, interested visitors can spend the whole night getting to know the different aspects of the quarter. And as befits the most international of Frankfurt's districts, they can sample culinary specialities from all over the world.
Every two years, to coincide with the Light+Building trade fair, the Luminale light art biennial is held in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region. All across the city, visitors can fall under the spell of installations in the interior and exterior of buildings and in public spaces that range from the impressive to the very subtle, immersing themselves in another world. Shuttle buses take you from one location to the next, allowing them to visit around 170 venues on six consecutive days.
The Frankfurt Studio Open Days allow interested visitors and art lovers to sneak a look into the studios and workshops of artists living in Frankfurt. Whether you set off on your own tour of exploration or take part in one of the guided tours offered by the studio complexes, the Frankfurt Studio Open Days give an exciting insight into the creative working process and provide a fascinating overview of the broad spectrum of fine arts in Frankfurt.
