Frankfurt am Main - city of art

Don't just look - buy!

Many galleries in Frankfurt offer art for sale and participate in international trade fairs. Frankfurt's best-known gallery is Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, which represents Tobias Rehberger and other artists. The Parisa Kind, Anita Beckers, Heike Strelow and Martina Detterer galleries also feature artists of national and international standing.

Gallery owner Bärbel Grässlin has been running a showroom near Konstablerwache since 1985. Her main focus is on presenting contemporary conceptual works. Her programme comprises German artists of the 1980s and 1990s, e.g. Günther Förg, Martin Kippenberger, Imi Knoebel and Albert Oehlen. Also among her repertoire are the Austrians Herbert Brandl and Franz West, as well as some up-and-coming young artists including Tobias Rehberger, winner of the Otto Dix Prize. The large, well-lit exhibition space is ideally suited to installations and group exhibitions. With drawings and prints also on offer there is plenty of interest to young collectors.

Compliant art? No, thanks! The Parisa Kind gallery in Sachsenhausen presents works from beyond the mainstream. Its programme features rising stars like Mike Bouchet and Jorinde Voigt, but also radical pioneers such as Richard Jackson and emerging young talents.

The Anita Beckers gallery, located in Frankfurt's Gallus quarter, is a forum for young artists. Its particular focus is on experimental works created in new media.

The Heike Strelow gallery emerged in 1997 from the 'Projektbüro für Kunst und Kultur' (project office for arts and culture). It presents international artworks that redefine the concepts of landscape and nature across a range of different media. This is not restricted to geographical areas but also includes cultural, physical and media landscapes. Interdisciplinary research leading to innovations in form and content is at the heart of the gallery's work. While some of the artists represented by the gallery have been examining socially relevant issues for a long time it also deals with more recent perspectives.

Since February 1990 the Martina Detterer gallery has been providing an international forum for installations, sculpture, painting, photography and video art in its spacious rooms. It regularly organises group exhibitions that highlight thematic links between artists. The programme introduces representatives of the young avant garde as well as presenting well-known older artists.
