Frankfurt am Main - city of art

On stage and in the limelight

Award-winning and amazing. Frankfurt presents performing arts at the highest level. Frankfurt Opera is regarded as one of the best in Germany. The productions at the Schauspiel Frankfurt theatre on Willy Brandt square regularly attract huge audiences, while the Mousonturm building provides a venue for a range of performance types. The English Theatre is the largest English-language theatre on the European mainland. The Alte Oper concert hall was rebuilt in 1986 and hosts performances by touring theatre companies.

Regularly named as 'Best opera house in Germany' by critics, Frankfurt Opera is on a par with the operas of Vienna and Basel. Its productions feature both classic and contemporary works. The opera's resident orchestra is among the best in Europe.

The Schauspiel Frankfurt theatre in the city centre offers a varied programme with well-known directors. Alongside classic works the theatre also stages a number of premieres and first productions, and runs theatre projects and events for children and young people. The Panorama Bar in the Schauspielhaus is open before and after all performances and is also available as a party venue.

The Mousonturm building provides a venue for a range of performance types. In addition to readings and concerts it also offers exhibitions, theatre and dance. This venue is dedicated to creating cross-overs between the fine and the performing arts. It reopened in the autumn of 2012 following extensive restoration and expansion work, which coincided with a new focus in the programming. The interconnection between the fine and the performing arts is set to become even closer in future.

The English Theatre, located near the main train station, is the largest English-language theatre on the European mainland. The theatre was founded in 1979 and has been providing the city with entertainment in English ever since. In addition to plays the theatre also stages musicals these days.

The Alte Oper concert hall is a particular architectural gem. The building is often used as a venue for awards ceremonies, and also to stage touring shows. Ballet enthusiasts were recently able to enjoy a guest performance by the Russian State Ballet in the lovingly restored building.

Frankfurt is also home to The Forsythe Company: this internationally renowned dance ensemble, founded in 2005, is based at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt and at the HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts in Dresden. William Forsythe is regarded as one of the leading contemporary choreographers worldwide. His works are known for decoupling ballet from its associations with the classical repertoire and transforming it into a dynamic art form for the 21st century.

Besides the large theatres, Frankfurt also has many venues for satirical cabaret and readings.
