Celebrating 800 years of the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the 600th anniversary of its university

Having two big anniversaries so close together is a real stroke of luck – and Rostock will be celebrating this history in style over the next two years.

The Hanseatic city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is all set to party. In 2018, this former Grand Duchy on the Baltic Sea will not only celebrate its 800th anniversary, but a year later its university, the oldest on the Baltic coast, will be celebrating 600 years since its foundation. The anniversaries will be commemorated in 2018 and 2019 respectively with a packed programme of memorable events, exhibitions and inaugurations. Not to be missed, for example, is the 38th International Hanseatic Convention on 21 June this year, when 120 representatives from 16 Hanseatic cities will be gathering in Rostock, many of them arriving on old sailing ships. With events taking place in seven venues across the city's charming centre, you can fully immerse yourself in the world of the Hanseatic League, past and present, and join in the celebrations.

A toast to one of Germany's oldest universities

The highlights of the university's events in 2019 will be a large summer festival and a week-long festival in November, where you'll be able to get a real feel for this cosmopolitan city's vibrant culture and way of life.
