Hiking in Germany – a land rich in variety and charm

Germany's many hiking trails offer a chance to explore the country at your leisure and get some great exercise too. Encounter nature at its finest and cultural highlights as far as your feet can carry you.

Whether you're the athletic type, a culture vulture, travelling with family or already a seasoned hiker – Germany has the perfect route to satisfy every need and preference, be it along rivers or coastlines, across mountains or plains. Embark on a tour of discovery and enjoy our unique landscapes with their breathtaking views, cultural highlights and culinary pleasures. There are also lots of hiker-friendly accommodation options for spending the night.

Here we've picked out some of Germany's most beautiful hiking trails for you. The huge choice of routes extends from the Baltic Sea Coast Hiking Trail (E9) in the north, down to the Heidschnuckenweg trail at Lüneburg Heath, the Rheinsteig, which runs through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage site, the Malerweg (Painters' Way) in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and all the way south to the Goldsteig in Bavaria – the longest quality-certified hiking trail in Germany.

Insider tips for your hiking tour

Our hiking experts recommend trying regional food and drink, relaxing at secluded natural sites, and looking out for some of the more unusual attractions on your route. For a sheer adrenalin rush, try crossing the Geierlay rope bridge on the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. At a length of 360 metres, it is the second-longest rope suspension bridge in Europe, and not for the faint-hearted!
