In January, Museum Barberini opened its doors to the public on Alter Markt square in Potsdam. Pay it a visit and immerse yourself in the world of Impressionism.
The museum, housed in the reconstructed Barberini Palace, boasts a historical facade and a captivating line-up of exhibitions. Its inaugural exhibition, 'Impressionism: The Art of Landscape', which runs until 28 May, features the works of renowned artists such as Claude Monet and Gustave Caillebotte. And in the museum's 'Modern Art Classics' exhibition, you can admire paintings by Max Liebermann, Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky and Andy Warhol.
Even more first-class exhibitions to come
Highlights coming later in the year include 'From Hopper to Rothko: America's Road to Modern Art' (17 June – 3 October 2017) and 'Behind the Mask: Artists in the GDR' (28 October 2017 – 4 February 2018). The centrepiece of the GDR (East Germany) exhibition is the Jahrhundertschritt, an impressive bronze statue created by Wolfgang Mattheuer that has been permanently installed in the museum's garden.
Potsdam's enchanting parks and palaces
If you're visiting the museum, why not check out some of the other attractions in Potsdam? As the former seat of Prussian kings, the city has many charming parks and palaces in which to while away your time. The palaces and parks of Sanssouci, Babelsberg, Glienicke and Pfaueninsel ('Peacock Island') are all part of the Potsdam UNESCO World Heritage site. And if that's not enough culture for you, the city of Berlin is right on your doorstep!
