Start of the kale season

When the temperatures drop and winter is knocking at the door, it signals the start of the kale season in Germany. Serving curly kale is a much-loved tradition in the north of Germany in particular. But before the vegetable is eaten, it is customary to go on a 'kale tour'. This walk through the frosty countryside adds to the anticipation of a shared feast of kale in a local inn. The kale is traditionally served with potatoes, smoked sausages, bacon and gammon chops.

Oldenburg, the self-proclaimed 'kale tour capital', is crazy about curly kale and has even set up a 'kale academy', which won the city third place in the 2012 German Tourism Award.
