The Council of Constance

Between 1414 and 1418, the leading religious figures, politicians and scholars of the Middle Ages assembled in Constance to discuss the future of the divided Catholic Church and to elect a new Pope. The decisions that were reached at the council had a significant impact on the future development of the Catholic Church.

This historic occasion is being commemorated in Constance over the next four years with a series of events. The first is an exhibition entitled 'The Council of Constance 1414-1418. A Medieval World Event', which is being held at the Council of Constance building from 27 April to 21 September 2014. Some 300 outstanding examples of western art and cultural history from the period around 1400 to 1420 give a sense of the council's far-reaching influence.
