This January, the Fichtel Mountains have a treat in store for everyone who loves walking, nature and snow.
Forests covered in a carpet of white, the sound of snow crunching underfoot and the feel of fresh air in your lungs. From 17 to 21 January 2018, the stunning region around Ochsenkopf, the second-highest peak in the Fichtel Mountains, will host its third Winter Walking Festival. The event, organised by the German Ramblers' Association, promises an action-packed programme that's not just for mountaineers. In addition to the usual winter walks and health tours through the unspoilt natural landscapes, there are the ever-popular tours using specialist equipment such as snowshoes and ski skins. Along the way, you might catch a glimpse of a lynx or a black woodpecker. And at the end of day, you can enjoy a drink with your fellow participants in the Asenturm pub. There is a perfect trail for everyone and every level, from beginner to advanced, all led by professional guides.
Wanderlust and local culture
Nestled around Ochsenkopf and Schneeberg, at over 1.000 metres the highest peaks in Franconia and part of the Franconian Mountains Trail, lie the holiday resorts of Bischofsgrün, Fichtelberg, Mehlmeisel and Warmensteinach. After a morning of active pursuits, you can relax in one of the region's thermal spas or go on a cultural tour of Bayreuth and Wunsiedel, famous for their festivals, Selb, known for its porcelain, the Fichtel Mountain museum and the silver ore mine. More than 100 accommodation partners are looking forward to welcoming their guests during the Winter Walking Festival, which will kick off on 17 January with an opening event in Bischofsgrün.
