Cycle all round the Saarland in seven days
Discover Germany’s smallest federal state in all its variety while cycling on the approx. 221 miles (354 km) Saarland cycling route. It leads through beautiful scenery along the Saarland’s outer border. You will pass impressive reminders of the regions rich history such as Celtic and Roman excavations and much more. Be surprised!
Tour description First leg: Explore towns and countryside between Herbitzheim and Bexbach (23 miles/38 km) Things to see along the route are the “Gollenstein“ monolith, the Baroque historical town centre of Blieskastel and the Roman Museum in Homburg-Schwarzenacker.
Second leg: Enchanting towns and breathtaking clear views from Bexbach to the “Bostalsee“ lake In Bexbach, you can visit the mining museum. Cycling on via the “Jägerburger Weiher“ ponds and up the “Höcherberg“ you will reach the Bostalsee.
Third leg: Cycling through “Saarländische Schweiz“ to Weiskirchen (28 miles/45km) This part of the Saarland is called “Schweiz“ (Switzerland) because it is a bit hilly here which means you will be able to enjoy great views! You will cycle along the Prims, a tributary of the Saar, up to Weiskirchen.
Fourth leg: Green forests and quiet lakes from Weiskirchen to Orscholz (30.6 miles/49 km) Starting in Weiskirchen, you will pass small villages, get to know Losheim am See and finally reach Mettlach, the Saarland’s “ceramics capital“.
Fifth leg: Boundary stones and great views between Orscholz and Wallerfangen (47 miles/75km) Today, the Saarland cycling path runs along the Moselle. Alternatively, you can cut the route short via Borg and continue along the French-German border to Wallerfangen.
Sixth leg: Nature galore between Wallerfangen and Karlsbrunn (23 miles/38 km) Today, you will get to know the river Nied, another tributary of the Saar and cycle through the “Warndtwald“ forest. Your destination is Karlsbrunn with its Baroque hunting lodge and deer outdoor enclosure.
Seventh leg: A mixture of nature, archeology and industry between Karlsbrunn and Herbitzheim (42.5 miles/68 km) On your last day, you will reach the Saarland’s capital Saarbrücken via Völklingen and the World Heritage Site „Völklinger Hütte“ (former ironworks). You will cross the French border and get to Sarreguemines. The last part of your tour will take you to Herbitzheim, passing the European Culture Park in Bliesbruck-Reinheim. Don’t miss some beautiful orchids plots on the way.

Discover the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig
Our “Discover the Hunsrück Steig“ package is a great way to get a first impression of the long-distance trail that was opened in 2007.
Your hotelier will take you to the first top sight on the way and at the same time starting point of your tour – the “Cloef” viewpoint with its terrific view over the Saar Bow. From here, the trail meanders along and up to the “Schwarzwälder Hochwald“ (Black Forest high forest area) where the ground is densely covered in fern.
During your next day on the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig you will experience a particularly beautiful part of the trail with giant trees and rocks lining the path like impressive natural monuments. The trip will end in the climatic spa of Weiskirchen.
