    Cologne Cathedral
    The Cologne Cathedral
The Cologne cathedral is a cathedral of the superlative, a symbol and central attraction of the Rhine metropolis. Its size is emphasised by the gigantic pair of towers, which have dominated the panorama of the cathedral city since their completion in 1880. The catehdral is still today the second highest building in Cologne after the telecommunications tower. The area is no less impressive: The full length of the cathedral is 145 m., the cross nave is 86 m.wide. In comparison: a football pitch is "only" around 100 times 70 m. There is room for more than 20,000 people on the area of the cathedral, which encompasses almost 8,000 square metres.
                                                                                                                                  Ascent of the Tower
Climb the south tower of the Cathedral to its 97 m high viewing platform and enjoy a magnificent view of the City.

    Treasury
The treasures of Cologne Cathedral are displayed in the 13th century vaults - priceless reliquaries, liturgical objects and vestments, insignia of the archbishops and priests, medieval sculptures and Frankish grave finds.

Cult(o)ure throughout the Region“ – On the trail of Julius Caesar, Clemens August and Max Ernst
Enjoy a trip to the cultural highlights of our region and experience the thrill of periods long gone. Find out during our two-day trip how the Romans, the Electors of Cologne and the surrealistic art scene have shaped this region.

    Day 1:

You start out your trip in Brühl which boasts several “celebrities” at once. Two of Germany’s most beautiful and prominent rococo castles, Augustusburg and Falkenlust, plus the palace gardens, have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Visit Augustusburg Castle, the favourite summer residence of the Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, Clemens August von Bayern (1700-1761). Then take a romantic, 2.5 km long walk through the French gardens and the adjacent country park to Falkenlust, an enchanting hunting caste. In the afternoon you may encounter another celebrity in Brühl: Max Ernst, world-renowned dadaist and surrealist, was born in this town where the painter and sculptor has his very own museum. Undoubtedly, the focal point of this museum is the unique collection of 60 sculptures from the private collection of Max Ernst and his wife Dorothea Tanning. You may conclude the evening in one of the numerous restaurants in the attractive town centre of Brühl, for example the Balthasar Neumann Eatery. Or, during the months of May to September, visit a concert of the Brühl Castle Concert series. The castles in and around Brühl attract not only friends and fans of history and architecture but also lots of music aficionados: Each year, many people come to listen to and enjoy the Brühl Castle Concerts. You will spend the night at the Balthasar Neumann Guesthouse in Brühl, within easy walking distance. The guesthouse is named after the baroque builder and architect Balthasar Neumann who also designed the world-famous staircase inside Augustusburg Castle.

    Day 2:

Following a rich and sumptuous breakfast at the Balthasar Neumann Eatery, you’ll proceed to the Roman town of Zülpich which hosts the State Garden Show. Be amazed by the colourful show gardens, stroll along the promenade at the lakeside park, and enjoy the view from the Roman bastion across the unique park landscape. Then you go on to the historic town of Zülpich which holds many artefacts from the period when the Romans conquered the region under the command of Gaius Julius Caesar. Worthy of your time and visit are the Roman thermal baths and the adjacent Museum of Bathing Culture. These Roman springs are counted among the best preserved facilities of their kind north of the Alps. In the historic centre of Zülpich, numerous restaurants and cafes offer time and space for leisurely relaxation, allowing you to conclude your tour in a well-fortified and refreshed manner.
