Christmas markets in Cologne

What more majestic backdrop could there be for a Christmas market than Cologne Cathedral, the city's most famous landmark? Here there are no fewer than 160 craft pavilions. But that's by no means all. You can let yourself be whisked into the realm of the angels at the Christmas market on Neumarkt square, with its gorgeous huts, elaborately lit gables and magical starlight glow. Its counterpart on Rudolfplatz square is like a fairytale come true for children. The Heinzelmännchen Christmas market in the old quarter, according to legend the home of Cologne's gnomes, is a more rustic affair. There is an idyllic Christmas atmosphere to savour at the Christmas market in the municipal gardens, whilst on the Rhine riverbank outside the Chocolate Museum you'll find the Harbour Christmas Market and the medieval Christmas market with street performers, minstrels and jesters. That's not counting the Nativity scene exhibitions, concerts and many other festive treats. Newly established in Cologne, between the Sparkasse bank and Westgate on Rudolfplatz square, is Christmas Avenue, the gay and lesbian Christmas market with shows and variety entertainment.
