Since it first opened in 1879 the Herzogliches Museum in Gotha has had an eventful history.

The art collections of Friedenstein Palace are back on display as of October 2013 after extensive renovation work. The exhibition features a Chinese cabinet, a fascinating selection of Böttger stoneware and porcelain from Meissen and one of Europe's oldest collections of Egyptian artefacts including several mummies.
