The Upper Bavarian violin making centre of Mittenwald, situated in the Karwendel Alpine holiday region, lies between the Karwendel and the Wetterstein Mountains and directly on the border with Austria. The region offers endless recreational opportunities.
There are wide variety of walks on three levels: From simple walks and trails, through alpine hut tours and on to fixed rope climbs, with something suitable for everyone. An extensive network of cycle paths, at all skill levels, offers a variety of routes for cyclists and mountain bikers. In addition, there are many other outdoor activities to pursue in summer and winter. But Mittenwald also has much to offer culturally: the picturesque pedestrian area with many cafes and restaurants, the historic town centre with ornate "Lüftlmalereien" frescoes on building facades, the Baroque parish church of St. Peter and Paul and the violin making museum, which provides ample information about the craftsman tradition which still lives on today.
