Bremen and Bremerhaven: two cities – one region

The sister cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven delight visitors with their remarkable worlds of discovery, unusual maritime and historical attractions and sensational art and culture.

1200 years of tradition and openness characterise the Hanseatic city of Bremen on the Weser river. Its most famous landmarks – the splendid Weser Renaissance town hall and the venerable Roland statue – form a joint UNESCO World Heritage site on the historical market square. Bremen’s world-famous mascots are the Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairytale.

Exciting interactive exhibitions and science centres, insights into the technologies of tomorrow – Bremen’s is home to numerous projects that prove that science is anything but dry and boring. The botanika, Universum Bremen and the Ethnological Museum put the focus on learning by doing. And at EADS Astrium you can find out how astronauts eat, sleep and shower in zero gravity.

Not a month goes by without some exciting event taking place in Bremen – from the Freimarkt, Germany's oldest funfair, to concerts and plays, art exhibitions and the traditional Christmas market, whose Schlachte Magic stalls extend along the Weser river.

The port of Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven, the biggest city on Germany's North Sea coast, is situated where the Weser river empties into the North Sea. At its Havenwelten complex, science and stories of great emotion are brought to life in enthralling style. The German Emigration Centre recounts the period of German emigration, while Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8° Ost takes you on a journey through the Earth's climate zones. The German Maritime Museum is home to the oldest cog ship in the world and in the Zoo am Meer you can see polar bears, penguins and other animals romping around. Keep an eye out for huge ocean liners, visit museum ships anchored in the harbour and join the sightseeing tour of the international ports to learn about car and container transshipment. Bremerhaven History Museum looks at how people along Germany's coast lived and worked in bygone days and there is a focus on fish at the Schaufenster Fischereihafen – literally the window into the fishing port. Attractions here include the Atlanticum seawater aquarium, the Gera trawler, a seafood cooking studio and a restaurant.
