The Sauerland holiday region wows visitors with its variety, as the glorious natural surroundings lend themselves to a huge range of leisure activities in both summer and winter.
The Felsenmeer nature reserve is a sensational scenic highlight. It is home to bizarre rock formations, an animal world with a wide range of species and an up to 250-year-old tree population. Legend has it that dwarfs once lived under their roots.
Outdoorsy tourists also get their money's worth in the Sauerland, hiking along the various paths of the Rothaarsteig trail. With a bit of luck, they might spot a herd of European bison, the largest terrestrial mammals in Central Europe. Or exploring the wooded uplands on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, a 230 km path which leads cyclists into the Ruhr region.
The largest skiing region to the north of the Alps awaits winter sports enthusiasts. The Wintersport-Arena Sauerland boasts 57 ski resorts with 150 lifts and 300 hectares of slopes.
