Max Schmeling, Gustav 'Bubi' Scholz, Graciano and Ralf Rocchigiani, Henry Maske and Axel Schulz – these are just some of the many great fighters from Germany whose success in the international boxing arena has thrilled fans all over the world. The list is long and, with world champions Marco Huck (cruiserweight) and Felix Sturm (middleweight), nowhere near finished.
Germany has also become a base for boxing world champions from other countries. Ukrainian boxers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, multiple heavyweight world champions, have made Germany their home and contest many of their fights here. Bouts featuring the two brothers, who are considered gentlemen in the boxing scene, always attract thousands of spectators.
But it's not just in the premier discipline of heavyweight boxing that Germany leads the way. The country has also produced many great talents in other weight classes who demonstrate their abilities in front of thousands of spectators at lavishly staged boxing events.
Hamburg is the unofficial boxing capital of Germany and is home to three of its most famous boxing clubs. Promotion for the Klitschko brothers was also based in the city – and today they run their own agency from Hamburg, the 'gateway to the world'.
